The project as it currently stands is comprised of disparate parts with materials that range from c-prints to Xerox paper, plaster to molasses. With the introduction of these new materials that lie outside of the photographic medium, a new mode of execution has begin to open up, realizing that that the found photographs are merely source materials for what could begin to take shape. This has taken my process to include audio, a component that is seen as one possible solution to string all these elements together to make one form based on modularity.
Before the introduction of these new forms, the project suffered from monotony, that is, similar use of shapes, forms, source materials to create variations that centered around one similar visual idea; an idea and form of execution I was becoming disenchanted with. My treatment of the abstract forms (the colorful swirling formations) with hindsight seemed too reverent to its original state. Though my process included ripping and tearing they were the most cautious enactments of those actions that one could imagine.
Through the investigation of land and more importantly its place within the Jamaican culture, my choice of materials have opened up extensively. To keep to the outline of the abstracted forms dictated by the movement of that body water that once washed over its surface seems ridiculous at this point in my process. The exercise of further distorting, reworking, selecting and adding moves me in a direction that begins to divert from the reverence once experienced.
I suppose the primary concern for this project now lies with disparity. Though I enjoy the broadening of my outlook on the possible executions of this project, moving from purely two dimensional, to experimentation with sculpture and audio. I suppose the next problem lies with how these elements will come together without being a jumbled misrepresentation that touches on distinct ideas that when forced together do not correlate visually or conceptually. With installation, more leeway is given to tie together these ideas, how so becomes the ultimate question. The only way to truly resolve this problem is through the continued exercise of experimentation with audio, object placement and material manipulation of 2d works.
I don’t know exactly where this piece will end up but I am interested in the fact that it rests in a place of limbo - creation and entropy or may be none of the above. This will be printed on Xerox paper playing with the degradation that will result through the process of printing and the constraints of its digital size.
