The following unedited recordings are snippets of a larger audio compilation that document the moments before and after my great uncle's funeral.
The recordings, done on a 2 speed cassette record player, were recorded by my mother on her subsequent trip back home to Westmoreland, Jamaica. The recording ranges from the celebration prior to the funeral, simply called "nine night" to the actual church service that honors his memory. The quality of the recorder, shoddy at best, when combined with the jubilant voices interspersed throughout the event, flares up at moments and greatly distorts the audio quality. What follows are abstractions of moments, one filled with collective singing at times, stereo playing at others and candid instances of my mother gossiping, mourning and celebrating; all veiled by the archaic static of the microcassette recorder.
This audio will be used in future installations.
